Printed on vintage hand-embroidered linens, these swans are available to purchase from my Etsy store. To make best use of tiny scraps, black swans are also available, which I have pieced together from smaller parts, then dyed black. The fabrics are so gorgeous, theses swans are my celebration of the time and creativity which has created the material treasures.

When I laid out my templates to cut out the bag handles, I could see that there had been layers of paint splashes on the top of the wardrobe, in blue and pink, suggesting layers of family life. I have kept these splashes in the finished bag - which is made from an old leather coat and lined with fabric from a skirt.

From how to why?

Craft can be a place where mending and making have equal status, and where processes can ask why make anything at all? My intention with a stitched concrete project, was to ask these questions through experiment with materials, to practically and thematically juxtapose the hard exteriority of concrete with domestic soft nurturing spaces.

Sometimes, the best way to say something important, is to make something by hand
